DEPUTY Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng will be in China from Sunday to Tuesday to attend the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) 15th anniversary celebrations.

He will be accompanied by Minister-of-State for Trade & Industry and Manpower Lee Yi Shyan, as well as officials from MTI, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Enterprise (IE) Singapore and Jurong Town Council.

The 15th anniversary celebrations for the SIP project will be held on Tuesday with a commemorative ceremony in Suzhou.

DPM Wong and Chinese Vice-Premier Wang Qishan, in their capacity as co-chairmen of the SIP Joint Steering Council (JSC), will grace the ceremony.

They will also attend a tree-planting ceremony at the SIP Science Hub and launch an exhibition on the 15 years of SIP achievements, said an MTI statement on Sunday.

Established in 1994, SIP is Singapore's first flagship Government-to-Government project with China.

In the past 15 years, SIP has attracted US$35 billion (S$50 billion) in investments from 3,500 companies, including 79 Fortune 500 companies. Its GDP in 2008 exceeded RMB100 billion, contributing 15 per cent of Suzhou's GDP.

'SIP is today recognized as one of the top industrial parks in China,' said MTI.

During his visit, DPM Wong will also witness a signing cum groundbreaking ceremony for the Singapore-Nanjing Eco High-Tech Island together with Jiangsu Party Secretary Liang Baohua.

This is a project jointly undertaken by a Singapore consortium, comprising Yanlord Land Group Ltd, Surbana Corporation Pte Ltd and Sembcorp Industries Ltd and Nanjing partners.

In addition, DPM will witness the groundbreaking ceremony for the Suzhou-Nantong High Tech Park, together with Party Secretary Liang.

The joint venture developer of SIP, China-Singapore SIP Development Co. (CSSD), has taken a stake in this project to develop a township in the Nantong Economic and Technological Development Area.

Both commercially-driven projects are supported by the Singapore-Jiangsu Cooperation Council.
