A FATHER who went to court to sit in on his son's appeal against a jail term has instead landed himself a two-week stint in prison.
Noor Mohamed Ibrahim's offence: Hurling vulgarities at Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Francis Ng Yong Kiat. The 56-year-old father was at the High Court on Feb 20 for his son Muhammad Faizal's appeal against a 10-week jail term for criminal intimidation.
After the hearing, Noor Mohamed glared at Mr Ng outside the courtroom and hurled abuse at him. The remarks were overheard by Mr Ng's colleague, Mr David Khoo Kim Leng. Noor Mohamed also lunged at Mr Ng but was restrained by his wife, Madam Amir Jan Said Ali, 50.
In mitigation, Noor Mohamed said he had misunderstood the verdict. He thought the judge had handed his son a $5,000 fine on top of the jail term, when the judge had in fact dropped the jail term in favour of a fine.
