A COUPLE foiled a housebreaking attempt on a flat in Toa Payoh on Thursday morning which led to the arrest of a 51-year-old suspect.

Mr Izam, a resident of Toa Payoh Lorong 6, spotted a bare-bodied man removing the window panes of a unit at the opposite block at about 2.15am.

He woke his wife, Madam Sahara, who called the police while he continued observing the housebreaker.

With the information provided by the couple, the police located the unit and also spotted a few pieces of window pane lying outside the unit.

The officers cordoned off the area before alerting the flat occupant who was asleep.

On entering the premises, the officers searched and found the suspect hiding on the parapet outside the service balcony.

He was arrested and a cutter and gold chain were recovered from him.

Superintendent Alvin Leow, Acting Commander of Tanglin Police Division commended Mr Izam and his wife for their alertness and public spiritedness in looking out for their neighbours.

The suspect will be charged in court on Friday for housebreaking and theft by night.

This offence carries a jail term of two to 14 years, on conviction.
