MOTORISTS will have to give way to buses on more roads from June when the Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme is extended.
The scheme, which started with a three month trial in December at 22 bus stops along three roads, will now be extended islandwide over two years.
In the first phase, selected bus bays in the neighbourhoods of Choa Chu Kang, Ang Mo Kio and Tampines will be put under this scheme.
From June, a total of 180 bus bays will bear the painted yellow lines and white triangles to signal that motorists have to give way to buses pulling out.
The trial found that buses on average took a shorter time to pull out of bus bays with this scheme in place.
At Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, for example, buses took 6.1 minutes, down from 10.2 minutes.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA), which conducted this trial, also found that motorists were not affected by the trial.
Average speeds on these roads stayed the same or went down by at most 1kmh.
Converting the first 180 bus bays will cost the LTA over $1 million.
