THE Book Exchange was held in conjunction with the World Book Day, to promote a reading culture and for book lovers to recycle their books.

Held at The Plaza at the National Library Building, the public could exchange their used books with other book lovers.

Senior Minister of State for National Development and Education Grace Fu was the guest-of-honour for the event.

More than 40,000 used books had been collected from the public from April 11 to 24, where they dropped off their used books in return for one-for-one book exchange coupons.

Each person is limited to exchange up to a maximum of 30 books.

Although the event officially began at 10.30am, some had began queuing from as early as two hours before.

Ms Shirley Chow, who was the first in the queue at 8am and had donated over 20 books, said: 'I was the first here, so the person in charge actually gave me a chair to sit on and some drinks and food to eat. I came early as I was afraid that I would have to fight with the others for the good books.'

The retiree in her early 60s is looking out for cookbooks and non-fiction books for her children.
