A CHINESE national accused of murdering a taxi driver apparently tried to extort $150,000 from the victim's wife.

Wang Wenfeng, 30, was charged on Wednesday with the murder of Mr Yuen Swee Hong, 41, at Jalan Semiling in Sembawang between April 10 and 11 this year.

Last week, he was accused, together with alleged accomplice Wang Wufu, 31, of trying to extort $150,000 from the taxi driver's wife, Madam Chan Oi Lin, 54.

She was warned that if she did not pay up, her husband would be in danger.

This alleged offence took place near Beach Road on April 11.

Mr Yuen's decomposed body was found at a forested area in Sembawang last Friday.

Wang Wufu was on Wednesday given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal on the extortion bid charge.

Wang Wenfeng was remanded for investigation until next Wednesday.

If found guilty of murder, he faces the mandatory death penalty.
