RESIDENTS living within the different wards of the Sembawang GRC will soon be linked via a single 23-km cycling track.

The track, costing about $6.3 million, will be competed in 2012, with Yishun Ring Road being the last leg of the project.

'Nurses living in the outlying areas can then ride all the way to work at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and home,' said Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Sunday morning.

Mr Khaw, who is also an MP of the Sembawag GRC, was launching the Sembawang-Woodlands New Town leg of the cycle track, completed this month.

The 7.4 km track, built at a cost of $2.8 million to provide separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians and prevent mishaps between the two.

'Many of the Chinese new citizens still carry on their way of life here - by cycling everywhere. This track helps facilitate this healthy lifestyle,' Mr Khaw said.

Resident Ong Lee Lee, 67, welcomed the new track, which joins Sembawang Town to Woodlands Town.

Being an elderly with bad knees, I often have difficulties jumping out of the way of oncoming cyclists. It was so dangerous,' she said.

Results of a survey conducted in 2007, and feedback from the grassroots had established that there is the significant cycling population in the GRC had warranted a the provision of cycling infrastructure in the area.
