SIXTEEN drink drivers were arrested in the early hours of Friday in a four-hour islandwide ringfencing operation.
This brings to 666 the number of drink drivers caught so far this year.
Police set up road blocks along Havelock Road, Ganges Avenue, Zion Road and both sides of Outram Road to ring-fence the cluster of entertainment outlets and drinking haunts in the vicinity.
Road blocks were also set up along North Buona Vista Road, Xilin Avenue, Dunman Road, Guillemard Road and Aljunied Road.
Police made 84 motorists take the breathalyser test. Sixteen of them - 15 men and 1 woman aged between 26 and 52 years - failed and were arrested for drink driving.
If convicted, they will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to six months, while repeat offenders face a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
