Student 'energy auditors'
TO HELP low-income families lower their utility costs, South West CDC has launched the ECo Energy Auditors @ South West programme.

This new initiative, which involves 1,000 low-income households, takes a two-pronged approach. It encompasses energy audits by 500 ITE student volunteers, and provides families with an energy-efficient lighting system.

The student volunteers will make house calls during weekends to 'audit' the households' energy consumption, and provide residents with tips to reduce their electricity usage.

These families will also receive a personalised consultation on their unique energy consumption patterns, complete with recommendations for remedial actions. They will also get a free installation of an energy efficient new technology lighting system for one lighting point.

To further encourage lower power consumption, the South West CDC is introducing the South West CDC-Philips 10% ECo Challenge, where a minimum 10 per cent savings will earn the low-income household a free energy efficient appliance.

The household with the most savings will walk away with a Philips EcoMoods Lighting System worth at least $1,000.

The ECo Energy Auditors @ South West Scheme is part of the South West district's 10-year Environment and Community (ECo) South West sustainability masterplan to achieve savings for the environment and residents.
