Free weather info on phones
THOSE with 3G mobile phones will be able to receive local weather information on their phones from June.

The information will include the current weather, areas with rain, a three-day forecast, temperature, wind speed and direction, as well as humidity levels in different locations across the island.

Cellphone users can receive weather information now, say, by visiting the weatherman's website, but the information coming via the Weather@SG service promises graphics and animation designed specifically for the mobile phone.

The service is free, though telecommunication companies' data charges will apply.

Users will need to key in a Web address, which has not yet been released.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) has teamed up with Microsoft Singapore to develop the service, which will be tested as a pilot project for a year.

NEA said it hopes to 'extend the reach of its weather services' by leveraging on the high number of mobile phone users in Singapore.

Its director-general of meteorological services division, Mr Foong Chee Leong, said: 'We hope our support for this partnership will spur the private sector to offer more innovative solutions to help NEA deliver its environmental services.'
