By Maria Almenoar
THE first civil works contract has been awarded for the Downtown Line Stage 2.

GS Engineering and Construction Corp of South Korea and Singapore's Hock Lian Seng Infrastructure have won a $410.7 million contract to design and build the DTL depot and associated tunnels.

The 21-hectare depot is off Woodlands Road and at the north end of the DTL Stage 2.

It will house the Operation Control Centre and provide maintenance and support facilities for the DTL Stages 1 and 2.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of next year and end in 2015.

When completed, the DTL Stage 2 will be a 16.6km underground train system with 12 stations and one depot.

It will run among the Upper Bukit Timah corridor towards the city centre and link the north-western part of island to the Marina Bay area.
