Help for the destitute

WHEN Mr Mohammad Zakariya's family of six first went on the dole in 1999 after an accident left him paralysed, they lived on $570 a month in government help.

The amount later rose to $1,100. With the latest revision to the public assistance (PA) grant announced last week - the third in two years - the family will receive $1,540 a month from April.

But confirmation of how much he will get is yet to reach him. 'All I know is that we will get more,' said the father of four sons aged 14 to 19.
