All-rounded education important
By Diana Othman
THREE hundred and thirteen teachers received their diplomas on Wednesday at the National Institute of Singapore (NIE) Teachers' Investiture Ceremony held in Nanyang Technological University.

They have been posted to schools including primary and secondary institutions and junior colleges since December last year.

Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen was the guest-of-honour.

In his speech, Dr Ng addressed the importance of an 'all-rounded education' in which academic achievements must be 'complemented by developments in other areas of students' lives'.

Two of the graduands who exemplified this are Miss Lin Xiaojun and Louis Lim who conducted a camp for 29 at-risk teenagers in June last year.

For three days, the teens played games, and learnt skills such as dance and photography which helped develop their interest and confidence.

'You may not need spectacular programs just well thought out and implemented ones that you are personally committed to. Your beliefs and conviction can have a catalytic effect on your students, and those around you. Passion is better caught than taught,' he said.

Mr Jose Pablo Tambagan Boquiren, 24, was appointed valedictorian for being an all-rounded student himself.

Posted to his alma mater Tampines Junior College, Mr Boquiren did well academically and had an active student life also. He led a team of about 20 youth volunteers from secondary schools such as St. Patrick's and St Joseph's Institute who would tutor needy primary five and six pupils.

They would also conduct games, songs and other activities to enrich the pupils' learning experiences and build their confidence.

'Confidence is very important because it is something they will take with them throughout their lives,' said Mr Boquiren.
