A MAN was charged on Monday with causing the death of a rear seat passenger and injuring three others by doing a rash act two years ago.
Irawan Hanafi Ruddy, 35, is accused of speeding along Still Road, causing his Toyota Corolla to veer left, mount a kerb and hit the concrete wall of a house, resulting in the death of Mr Ismail Abu Bakar, 40, at 11.38pm on Dec 1, 2006.
He is said to have caused grievous hurt to Ms Sabiah Abu Bakar, 44, in the rear right seat, and caused hurt to front seat passenger Jeanne Charlemae Dideles, 26, and Ms Loraine Bueud Arat, 32, who was seated behind.
The fifth charge accuses the then work permit agent of not displaying a probationary driver's licence.
His case was adjourned to Feb 23.
If convicted of causing death by doing a rash or negligent act, he can be jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
For causing grievous hurt, the penalty is up to two years' jail or a fine of up to $1,000 or both.
The maximum for causing hurt by doing a rash act to endanger life is a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up $500 or both.
