Cop charged with graft
By Elena Chong

A POLICEMAN from Criminal Investigation Department was charged in a district court on Tuesday with corruption and neglect of duty.

Ganesan Maniam, 39, was a staff sergeant attached to the Secret Societies Branch in 2003 when he allegedly accepted two loans of $4,000 and $2,000 from pub operator Andrew Rajendran Govindasamy.

He is said to have obtained the bribes in return for being lenient when conducting raids on Mr Rajendran's two pubs, Club 6 Music Lounge and Ragawood.

He also faces a police summons charge of failing to report one Mok Chee Kin in 2006 for selling pirated computer software in 2006 when he was attached to the security unit of the Police Cantonment Complex.

Ganesan said he wanted to engage a lawyer and his case will be mentioned on Jan 13.

Bail of $10,000 was allowed. His passport was impounded.

If convicted of corruption, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or five years per charge.

For neglect of duty, he can be fined up to $1,000 or jailed for up to six months or both, under the Police Force Act.
