Man fined for lucky draw scam
By Elena Chong

A MAN who agreed to give bribes to a MediaCorp Enterprises executive to rig a lucky draw was fined a total of $16,000 on Tuesday for corruption.

Alan Leng Chih Wei, 31, who pleaded guilty to three charges, agreed to give $2,500 of Shell fuel vouchers to Teh Gim Leng, then a senior accounts manager of MediaCorp Enterprises, to choose him as the lucky draw winner of the free fuel for a year on Oct 5 last year.

But before he could give half of the prize to Teh, he was investigated by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau on Nov 7.

Leng had also abetted his colleagues, Ong Eng Kong and Steven Tan Chye Leng, to corruptly agree to give $3,000 worth of Shell fuel vouchers and $2,500 in cash respectively to Teh on Oct 26 last year.

The court heard that Teh had asked Leng to introduce his friends to him who were also interested in the scam.

Teh said he wanted a payment of $3,000 in Shell fuel vouchers or $2,000 in cash in return for rigging the draw by choosing the winner.

Teh, 29, who was in charge of the daily draws, has since served his three-month jail term for corruption. He was ordered to pay a penalty of nearly $6,000.

Leng could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years on each charge of corruption.

Two other similar charges were taken into consideration.

Most of the people involved in the scam have been brought to court and fined
