ACCOLADES have been given to three toilets in the South West district as part of its annual Public Health Awards.

Nine toilets in coffee shops, hawker centres and shopping malls had been nominated in the Clean, Dry and Sparkling Toilets category of the awards.

The toilets were assessed over two weeks by judges from South West Community Development Council, town councils in the district, the National Environment Agency and the Restroom Association of Singapore.

They were judged on criteria such as provisions and conditions of the toilets, the maintenance system and the comfort level of the loos.

In the hawker centre category, Yuhua Village Market and Food Centre came up tops.

Separately, Best Coffee shop triumphed in the coffee shop category, while the winner of the shopping mall category will be announced later on Tuesday.

For the first time, ITE students who are also residents were roped in to help assess the shortlisted toilets.

This is a prelude to the launch of the Eco Loo Assessors programme next year, which aims to get students to adopt restrooms in their neighbourhood.

They will carry out regular assessments of the toilets, and their feedback will be collated for the next awards.

A total of 21 nominations were received for this year's Public Health Awards.
