Man fined over fiance's death
By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent
A DRUNK woman died of her injuries after she had fallen off her fiance's motorcycle which skidded along a slip road of an expressway, a district court heard on Monday.

The rider of the motorcycle, customer care executive, Teo Wee Khuan, 27, was taking Ms Mandy Sim Ling Man, 23, home last Nov 8 when the accident happened along the slip road of East Coast Park Expressway.

Teo was fined $5,000 and banned from driving for five years after he admitted to causing her death by doing a negligent act at about 4am that day.

A district court heard that the couple fell off the machine when he skidded.

Ms Sim, an undergraduate then working as a part-time pub waitress, was found to have 123mg ethanol per 100ml of blood - about 11/2 times the legal limit for drink driving.

His lawyer, Ms Jennifer Lim, told District Judge Adrian Soon that the couple had known each other for many years and were very loving.

She said Teo was deeply affected by her death and had been depressed and even contemplated suicide on two separate occasions.

That day, he felt that his fiancee who was feeling tired was slipping off and losing balance while riding home.

He decided to pull over and take a cab instead. But before he could pull over, she was losing balance and he used his hand to pull her to stop her from falling over. By so doing, he also lost control of his motorcycle, and it skidded.

He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
