Fined for having stolen pups
By Elena Chong

A PET farm owner was fined $2,000 on Friday for having 10 puppies suspected to have been fraudulently obtained.

Chua Yong Chin, 34, is the second person to be dealt with over 21 puppies reported stolen from a pet farm at Pasir Ris Farmway 2 in May 2007.

A co-accused, Amanda Lee Teo Chu Lei, 21, was placed on 12 months' probation in September 2008 for disposing of a stolen Maltese and fraudulently having 11 puppies at Pasir Ris Farmway 2.

The man who sold her the puppies, cleaner Mohammed Alagmir Kabir Abdul Hakim Moral, 36, is still at large.

The court heard that the cleaner called up his boss, Mr Tan Buck Chua, 46, owner of Animal House nearby, at about 1am on May 31, 2007, that his 21 puppies were missing from the farm.

Investigation showed that the foreign worker had approached Lee to buy all the puppies on May 30. He claimed they came from his friend in Malaysia.

But Lee knew that Mr Mohammed Alagmir was working for Mr Tan and that the price he asked for each puppy was very low.

As she could not afford to buy them all, she asked Chua to buy some and he agreed.

She paid $3,200 to the cleaner for 11 puppies while Chua paid the same amount to her for 10 puppies.

Police recovered five from Chua. Five others died.

Pleading for a chance, Chua told District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan he would not buy any puppies from others again.

He could have been fined up to $3,000 and/or jailed for up to one year for the offence.
