A MINI bus driver overtook two vehicles and rammed into a stationary car, causing it to surge forward onto the opposite side of the road and was hit by a tipper.
The accident on Nov 7, 2007 resulted in the death of Mr Rossow Geb Schwingenschloegl Gerd, 48, four days later.
On Friday, bus driver Ng Tor Nee, 35, was fined $8,000 or eight weeks' jail in default and banned from driving for three years for causing death by a negligent act at the uncontrolled junction of Tuas West Drive and the entrance of Raffles Marina.
He pleaded guilty.
A district court heard that Ng was driving on the extreme left lane towards along Tuas West Drive when he overtook two cars. He swerved into the right lane negligently without keeping a proper lookout.
He collided into the back of Mr Gerd's car which was waiting to make a right turn into Raffles Marina.
On impact, Mr Gerd's car surged forward and cut into the path of an oncoming tipper truck.
Police found him lying unconscious still belted in the driver's seat. He died in hospital four days later of severe pneumonia and multiple injuries.
Ng, who had just been released from jail three days ago for an unrelated offence, could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
