5 hurt in scaffolding collapse
THE metal scaffolding being erected for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, collapsed yesterday, injuring five workers.

The five men were rigging two three-storey-high structures that were to be used as video walls in the middle of the Padang.

The workers fell to the ground when the platform they were standing on gave way at about 5.20pm.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesman said most of the workers suffered abrasions. Currently, three of the workers have been discharged from the Singapore General Hospital. However, two workers remain hospitalised for observation.

The organisers said the scaffolding was being built to support giant television screens but declined to elaborate on what might have caused the accident.

A Manpower Ministry spokesman said the contractor, events logistics company Showtec, has stopped work on the site.
