Homegrown brands honoured
By Gabriel Chen
WHAT does a pet chain store have in common with a soya milk chain?

Pet Lovers Centre and Mr Bean, both homegrown companies, emerged as overall winners across the four award categories of the Singapore Prestige Brand Award (SPBA).

Two others that clinched top honours were Food Republic, which was also the overall winner for the promising brands category, and The Hour Glass, which snagged the SPBA CitiBusiness Regional Brands award.

The awards were given out at a ceremony at the Shangri-La Hotel on Wednesday night. The event is is jointly organised by the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (Asme) and Lianhe Zaobao and comprises four categories.

Each year, selected candidates are put through a stringent and rigorous judging process by a panel of judges before the winners for each category are finally selected. For each award category, an overall winner is chosen.

For example, among the 14 winners in the promising brand category were Food Republic, Taka Jewellery and private wealth management firm Providend. Under this category, firms must be three to eight years old.

In the established brand category, winners include payment operator Nets, Thomson Medical Centre, and spa provider Rustic Nirvana.
