MOTORISTS heading across the Causeway have until Dec 16 to acquaint themselves with Johor Baru's new customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) facility, the Sultan Iskandar Complex.

While immigration checks are still carried out at the old terminal for now, motorists are being directed to drive through the new terminal before it becomes fully operational in two weeks.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Johor state immigration director Mohd Nasri Ishak said the arrangement would familiarise the public with the new routes through the CIQ ahead of time.

'So far, traffic flow has been smooth and we have stationed our officers to guide those who are not so clear.'

All immigration processing will be done at the new complex from Dec 16, when the old terminal will cease to be in use.

Payment for the RM2.90 (S$1.20) fee to enter Malaysia will have to be made through 'Touch n Go' cards. Cash will not be accepted.

The smart cards, priced at RM20, are available at the old terminal, the new complex, as well as petrol stations and Telekom Malaysia shops in Johor Baru.

The RM$1.3 billion multi-storey Sultan Iskandar Complex is a sprawling facility built on a 113ha site in Bukit Chagar, with 76 lanes for cars and 100 lanes for motorcycles.

Motorists told The Straits Times that they found the new complex to be pleasant and spacious, but some felt the drive through it was too long, and that it was less conveniently located than the old one.
