U-Tapao flights to go on

SINGAPORE Airlines (SIA) will continue its twice-daily flights between U-Tapao in Bangkok and Singapore until Friday, it said on Tuesday.

It will decide later in the week whether to continue the extra flights on the weekend.

In addition, SilkAir is increasing its capacity on the Phuket route for the rest of this week and into the weekend to help meet demand from those who have travelled over land to leave Bangkok.

By the end of this week, SIA and SilkAir would have added over 15,000 seats in and out of Thailand to help customers stranded by the closure of Suvarnabhmui International Airport.

SIA also advised those trying to leave Thailand who are able to travel overland to Phuket to contact the airline to book a seat from there, rather than trying to use U-Tapao.

"The facilities at U-Tapao are struggling to cope with very high demand, and this is causing delays to flights," said SIA in a statement.

Any customers in Thailand who have not yet contacted SIA and who are trying to make arrangements to leave should call the airline on +66-2 353 6000 or +65 6223 8888 and provide contact details.

Customers are advised to prepare for delays at airports given the congestion.

Meantime, SIA said the Boeing 777-200 that was grounded in Bangkok when the airport was seized by protestors returned to Singapore on Monday night.

The flight was not allowed to carry passengers.
