Make access to ARV drugs easier
By Wong Kim Hoh
LIKE many doctors, Dr Arlene Chua takes her Hippocratic Oath very seriously.

The infectious diseases specialist, who is a consultant at National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), also loves passing her knowledge on to younger doctors.

Earlier this year, she asked a trainee what she wanted to specialise in.

'She told me that she initially wanted to be an HIV specialist,' Dr Chua says, referring to the virus which causes Aids or acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

'But after spending a year in training, she changed her mind.'

The trainee was frustrated at not being able to provide the best care and treatment for HIV patients in Singapore.

The reason? They do not have easy access to anti-retroviral (ARV) medication which is not subsidised in Singapore.
