JUST a day after her operation, Nepalese twin Jamuna Shrestha, eight, is out of danger and moved to the general ward on Thursday.

She had wanted to return to the familiar room on Wednesday, saying she was feeling fine and there was no need for her to be kept in intensive care.

But doctors felt she needed close monitoring after the more than four-hour surgery to her brain. The base of her head now has a 3-cm circle with no bone covering - similar to the palm-sized patch at the top of her head.

Her trip to Singapore, following the death of her former conjoined twin Ganga in July, was originally to put a hard covering to the top of her head. But the discovery of a more pressing problem has put that on hold.

Since the surgery to ease the blockage of the spinal canal caused by the lower part of her brain, thoughts again turn to the important surgery.

Her well wishers, several of whom have come forward with financial help, hope that can be done before she returns to Nepal.

They have sponsored her flight back to Singapore, her stay at the hostel, and incidentals which are not covered by the donations given when the twins first arrived here in 2000.

That money was for the surgery to separate them. About $57,000 is left. Some of that will be used to pay for her current treatment, as well as the rehabilitation she needs to help strengthen her weak right arm and leg.
