THE Land Transport Authority has awarded the fifth of six major civil contracts for the underground and undersea Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE).
Samsung C&T Corp clinched the deal to build about 800m of tunnels, including provisions for future links to other roads, for $634.8 million.
It will also build one of two ventilation buildings and undertake some reclamation works in the area.
The latest contract brings the cost of the 5km 10-lane highway to about $3.7 billion - well beyond its estimated $2.5 billion price tag.
The MCE links Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway to Ayer Rajah Expressway, with access to the new financial and leisure district in Marina South.
Construction is due to start in the first quarter of next year, and the expressway is expected to be completed by 2013.
