Jurong West murder
Family visits son's flat
By Kimberly Spykerman
THE family of Wu Yunzhong, the 18-year-old China National found dead in a flat in Jurong West three weeks ago, arrived in Singapore to bid him a final goodbye.

The teen, who was here on a work permit, had moved into the flat only the day before. His flatmate, 20-year-old He Junbo, has been charged with his murder.

Mr Wu Sijing, the victim's father, flew into Singapore on Monday morning, accompanied by two other relatives.

The proceedings were hurried, and it was clear that the family was still struggling to come to terms with their tragedy.

Mr Wu, who is in his 40s, was dressed simply in a black jacket and jeans. He looked grim and was reticent.

After claiming Wu's body, the family asked to be taken to the scene of his death. At the flat, a Buddhist monk conducted a brief prayer ceremony.

Mr Wu maintained a stoic front throughout, and lost his composure only at Mandai Crematorium when he asked for the coffin lid to be lifted so he could look at his son's body for the last time.

He paid his respects, before breaking into sobs.

Mr Wu had also brought items of his younger son's clothing, that were placed in the casket.

Undertaker Roland Tay, 62, of Direct Singapore Funeral Services, who made the funeral arrangements, said that he would be collecting the ashes on the family's behalf.

They will fly back to their village in the Shandong province on Monday night with the remains.
