A SUB-CONTRACTOR beat the red lights at a signalised pedestrian crossing and caused the death of a woman pedestrian.
Ong Woo Meng, 45, was driving a lorry along the extreme right of New Upper Changi Road on Oct 21 last year when he failed to stop at the traffic red light signal.
His lorry hit Madam Tang Peck Ngim, 54, who was flung forward and landed in the middle of the road.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Elizabeth Lee told the court that Ong stopped his lorry for a few moments without alighting and drove away from the scene of the accident.
Part of the registration number plate was noted down by a witness who reported to the police.
An island-wide search was conducted for vehicles with similar registration numbers, and Ong's lorry was traced to his employer's premises in Bedok.
Ong later turned up at the office with the lorry. A police officer gave him a breathalyzer test after noticing his bloodshot eyes and alcoholic breath.
He failed the test. He was arrested and escorted to Traffic Police Headquarters for another test.
His breath specimen was found to contain 63mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, which exceeded the legal limit of 35mcg.
Ong admitted to causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, failing to render assistance and removing his vehicle without authority.
But he claimed trial to drink driving. The hearing continues.
