Choa Chu Kang library opens
By Diana Othman
A NEW and improved version of Choa Chu Kang housing estate's library opened on Friday, drawing crowds of eager readers.

About 100 people stood in line an hour before it opened, to be the first ones to check out the place and its collection of books.

Located on the fourth storey of Lot One Shopper's Mall, it covers 2,394 sq m, which makes it 38 per cent bigger than the previous library on the third floor of the mall.

The library now has 190,000 books, a collection which will grow to 210,000 next year.

It also carries 390 magazine titles and 10 newspaper titles.

A 'storytelling zone' has been set aside for library staff and volunteers to read to children; a 'talk zone' gives space to users to make and receive telephone calls.

The library is an example of what the National Library Board (NLB) is shooting for, in its 2010 plan to transform its libraries into dynamic 'social spaces' which encourage community learning and social integration, said NLB chief executive N. Varaprasad on Friday.
