7 nabbed for using fake cards
POLICE and immigration authorities nabbed seven Sri Lankans suspected of purchasing about $20,000 worth of goods using counterfeit credit cards.

In a joint operation between the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) late on Tuesday, officers arrested four Sri Lankans occupants of a hotel room.

Officers found 18 counterfeit credit cards and a card printer, a laptop, transaction receipts and stolen goods worth about $20,000.

Officers staking out in the vicinity later nabbed another three Sri Lankans when they were spotted returning to their hotel rooms. 10 more counterfeit credits cards were found in the possession of two of the suspects.

The operation began with information recieved by ICA on arrangements made by a group of Sri Lankans who were suspected to be entering Singapore for a 'shopping spree', the ICA and the Singapore Police Force said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

ICA officers gathered further information on the movement of these foreigners and managed to track down where they were staying in Singapore.

If convicted, each suspect may be jailed up to 15 years or be liable to a fine, or both for possessing counterfeit credit cards. The punishment for cheating is up to 10 years in jail, or a fine, or both.

Police investigations are on going.
