UOB attempted robbery
Man faces drug charge

A MAN accused of the attempted robbery at United Overseas Bank at City Plaza last Monday was also charged with taking morphine.

Ismail Shaikh Ahmad, 45, who was produced in court for the first time on Wednesday, is said to have taken morphine on Nov 10, the day he allegedly tried to rob UOB teller Ow Soon Hock, 46, by placing two threatening notes at the counter.

Ismail, who was charged in hospital last Wednesday, wore a tudung, a coat and had gloves on when he tried to rob the bank.

Bail of $30,000 was allowed.

His passport was impounded.

If convicted of the attempted robbery, he can be jailed for between two and seven years plus at least six strokes of the cane.

He is liable for enhanced punishment of up to 10 years and/or fined up to $20,000 if he is found guilty of drug consumption.

He will appear in court again on Dec 3.
