Now into its 8th year, it was declared in 2001 by the World Toilet Organisation, a non-profit organisation which aims to improve toilet and sanitation conditions worldwide.

Other than an annual World Toilet Summit which brings together academics, sanitation experts and environmentalists, each toilet association also organises activities to promote clean toilets in their respective countries.
