A YOUNG woman motorist who caused the death of a pedestrian through her negligence was jailed for one month and banned from driving for five years on Monday.
Lee Chau Yeng, 23, had earlier admitted to causing the death of Madam Hoh Ah Moy, 66, by failing to exercise care along Dunman Road on July 24 last year.
Madam Hoh was accompanying her husband, Mr Lim Lee Thong, 77, who is blind in the right eye, for a medical appointment at National Eye Centre when they were knocked down.
Lee was driving on the extreme left of the two-lane road when she saw the couple standing in the centre of Dunman Road and were about to cross to Tanjong Katong Road.
She sounded her horn to alert them when she was 1 1/2 car lengths away.
The couple looked towards the direction of the car when they were along the dotted white lines.
Lee then stepped on the accelerator pedal to continue driving forward, thinking that the couple would give way to the car.
The car then hit them. Lee called the ambulance and attended to the couple.
The couple were taken to Changi General Hospital where Madam Hoh died about seven hours later of multiple injuries.
Lee, who had a second charge of injuring Mr Lim considered, was on her way to take her examination at the time, the court heard.
Her lawyer, Mr SG Kannan, said since the accident, Lee had been suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
A part-time nurse during weekends, Lee works as a customer service coordinator.
She could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
