EXCITEMENT here is building over the upcoming release of a sequel to the planet's most popular online game, World of Warcraft.
Thousands of Singaporeans have bombarded game shops with pre-orders for Wrath of the Lich King, which officially hits stores on Friday.
It is the second follow-up to a game that boasts over 11 million players world-wide.
'Demand is still as hot as the first one,' said a salesman at The Software Boutique at Funan the IT Mall, who asked not be named.
'Gamers have been scrambling to order as they all want to be the first to log into the game.'
Now four years old, World of Warcraft allows gamers to romp through a massive virtual world filled with dwarves, sorcerers and warriors. Famous for its interactivity, it allows players to chat with other gamers and form teams, waging campaigns across an expansive environment.
Distributor Asiasoft expects to sell 30,000 box sets of Wrath of the Lich King in the first week. That is 50 per cent more than the first World of Warcraft sequel released in January 2007. If the target is met, it will break the previous sales record set by Grand Theft Auto 4, which was released earlier this year.
