THE tragic accident along Dunearn Road in February where three men died was due to the driver's reckless driving, said a coroner.

State Coroner Victor Yeo said it was fortuitous that the traffic was very light given that it happened in the early hours of the morning and no other vehicle was involved when the driver beat the red light at a high speed.

The Feb 10 accident left a fourth man with traumatic brain injury. The survivor, Mr Muhammad Alif Mohamed Shah, 20, whose older brother died in the accident, now needs supervision for his daily activities.

Coroner Yeo recorded a verdict of misadventure on the death of the driver, bus captain Jayakumar Asokan, 26.

In respect of the deaths of Mr Alif's brother, Mohammad Khalil and Mr Sunthereswaran Nadesan Mariyappan, both 23, he recorded a verdict of death due to the Mr Jayakumar's negligence.

All four were flung out of the rented car at about 2.20am. None was wearing seat belts.

A taxi driver, Mr Chia Choon Khiang, 53, told police that he had stopped his taxi on the extreme left lane of Dunearn Road due to the red light when he head loud music from a vehicle coming from behind.

The vehicle zoomed past at a speed of about 160 to 170kmh with the windows wound down.

Mr Chia then saw the car losing control, veered to the right at a very fast speed, skidded across the junction to the right and mounted a road kerb before slamming into a tree.

He saw four persons being flung out of the car, one of whom was thrown into the canal.

Both Mr Khalil and Mr Sunthereswaran were pronounced dead while M Jayakumar was taken to hospital where he died at about noon.

The court heard that Mr Jayakumar was supposed to be the driver of the rented car hired by Madam S. Sasikala N. Ramaiah for her niece's wedding that day.
