By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent

A PART-TIME deliveryman who caused the death of an elderly pedestrian while reversing his vehicle was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for five years on Tuesday.

Leow Kee Wah, 53, pleaded guilty to negligently causing the death of Mr Sim Kay Leok, 90, at the loading and unloading bay of Block 725 Pasir Ris Street 72 on April 5.

A district court heard that Leow was reversing the van when it hit Mr Sim who was crossing from the rear of the vehicle.

Mr Sim was found lying under the carriageway of the van between the front and rear tyres.

He was pronounced dead about two hours later in hospital.

Leow could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing any rash or negligent act.
