THE Land Transport Authority has awarded six contracts worth $1.13 billion for the Downtown Line.
The contracts, which will cover all three stages of the project, will include the procurement of trains and other electrical and mechanical systems.
About Downtown Line
Downtown Line is the longest underground rail project to date, at 40km with 33 stations. It will run through high-traffic and built-up corridors fully underground. It will be built in three stages, and is targeted to be completed by 2016.
The DTL will facilitate direct travel from the northwestern and eastern areas of the island to the Central Business District (CBD) and the Marina Bay. It also provides a strategic transport link to support the development of the Marina Bay area.
Among the contracts is one awarded to the consortium of Bombardier Transportation GmbH / Bombardier (Singapore) for the procurement of 73 three-car electric trains at a cost of $570.7 million.
These trains will be fully automated and driverless. Such trains are being used for the North-East Line and will also be used for the upcoming Circle Line.
Another $287.5 million contract was awarded to Westinghouse Brake and Signal Holdings to provide the signalling system and platform screen doors at the stations, said LTA in a statement on Friday.
Singapore Technologies won the bid for the provision of integrated supervisory control system and for communications system. The two contracts are worth approximately $152 million in total.
Lifts will be provided by Otis Elevator Company in a contract worth $22.7 million; while escalators will be provided by Constructions Industrielles de la Mediterranee in a $100.3 million contract.
Mr Yam Ah Mee, LTA's Chief Executive said: 'With the award of these six DTL contracts, I am pleased that the progress of the project is on-time. We are looking forward to the completion of DTL1 in 2013.'
