A SENIOR Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer was charged on Thursday with accepting a total of $140,000 to grant extension of social visit passes to China and Vietnam nationals.
Dong Ching Jit, 54, an ICA deputy superintendent, was doing the duties of a manager, Customer Services (Social Visit Pass) Unit of Visitor Services Centre when he allegedly took bribes from one Edmund Hoon Wai Kein between Dec 2004 and Apr 2005.
He has been suspended from his duties since March last year.
Dong is said to have accepted between $5,000 and $48,000 from Mr Hoon in return for granting social visit passes to the foreigners.
He was represented by Mr Tng Kim Choon, who told the court that he had just been briefed.
Dong's bail was set at $100,000 and his passport has been impounded.
He will be back in court on Nov 18.
If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term of up to five years on each corruption charge.
