THE promise of change, coupled with Barack Obama's youth and energy, gave many Singaporeans much to cheer about on Wednesday, with many welcoming the entry of a new president who represents hope for the youth.

For many young Singaporeans, Mr Obama's victory came as especially significant - as a relatively young candidate, and as America's first black president.

Mr Obama, they said, showed the world that young people could make a difference and overcome major obstacles such as race. His close links to Asia and Africa, too, were seen as a boost for the region.

'This is indeed an historic moment for the minorities in America,' said Mr Poh Lip Hang, 23, an undergraduate at the Singapore Management University.

One cab driver who was so excited by the morning news of Mr Obama's victory in the state of Ohio that he forgot to start the meter running when a passenger got in, Mr Frederic Cabay - who was at the American Club to watch the elections - told The Straits Times.

Foreign Minister George Yeo on Wednesday described Mr Obama's victory as no less than 'historic'.

'I have no doubts that there will be a change in style. He is prepared to talk even to those who are adversaries,' he said at an awards ceremony. 'I believe his administration will bring about a different style, which is more situated to the times, to the world that has become after the Cold War.'
