A MAN who threw his younger sister's pet dog from a high floor was sentenced to a total of 6 1/2 years' jail and six strokes of the cane for the act and other offences.

Sim Wee Meng, 33, admitted on Wednesday to cruelly ill-treating an animal, two charges of drug consumption, and unlawfully having two foldable knives.

A district court heard that he was at his sister's home at Sengkang on Jan 21 last year when he suddenly grabbed her three-year-old pet Maltese called Prince by the neck and threw it out of the 22nd-floor living room window.

Shocked, his sister, Madam Sim Poh Tian, 30, screamed. Her neighbours heard her and helped to detain Sim.

The dog was found dead at the ground floor with multiple fractures and other severe injuries.

Sim's urine samples were taken and found positive for drugs.

On May 16, he was found at the void deck in Hougang with the offensive weapons.

Following his arrest, urine samples were taken and were found to contain drugs.

Sim has convictions for drug consumption, disorderly behaviour and gaming.

His lawyer S. S. Dhillon said Sim, who had been doing odd jobs, threw the dog down after a misunderstanding with his sister.
