Funeral wake gamblers fined

A GROUP of people who were caught gambling at a funeral wake in Jurong West last week were fined in court on Monday.

The 13 men and women pleaded guilty to gambling in a public place and were fined $1,000 - for first-time offenders - to $1,500 and $2,000 for those with previous convictions.

One of them, Tan Kim Beng, 43, was jailed for a week and fined $5,000.

According to court documents, the group gambled inside a tentage beside a wake at Block 839 Jurong West Street 81 on Oct 30.

They were seen playing a card game at a makeshift table using cash and gambling chips. When they spotted police officers, they ran but were caught.

Among the items seized was cash amounting to $2,785 and gambling chips.
