A NEW Electronic Road Pricing gantry went live on Monday morning along the westbound Pan Island Expressway.

Motorists passing the Eunos Link exit, motorists have to pay $2 from 7am to 7.30am, and $1 from 7.30am to 8am.

A Straits Times check along the stretch near the gantry found that traffic was generally smooth, with vehicles travelling at speeds of about 60kmh to 70kmh.

The Land Transport Authority had said earlier that traffic speeds along this stretch were observed to have fallen below the threshold of 45kmh.

The new gantry is one of six gantries that the LTA has initially planned for earlier this year. However, it said in September that it will implement only the PIE gantry because traffic speeds had improved at four of the five remaining locations - Commonwealth Avenue, Jalan Bukit Merah, Alexandra Road and the Ayer Rajah Expressway (westbound).

The fifth gantry, along Serangoon Road, was not implemented as well even though the traffic speeds have remained below the 45kmh threshold.

The LTA said then it was studying the physical environment in that area to see if any improvements can be made.
