Fine, 5-yr driving ban
By Sujin Thomas
A 52-year-old lorry driver was fined $10,000 and banned from driving for five years on Thursday for causing the death of a motorcyclist and injuring two others last October.

Chung Chun Wing was driving his lorry along the Bukit Timah Expressway in the direction of Woodlands in the early hours of Oct 19, said court documents.

Meanwhile, two Malaysians - Marvin Jong Pit Hiun, 20, and Lim Szu Hock, 20 - who were riding on a motorcycle along the same road, moved to the extreme left lane because of a tyre problem.

Jong, who was the rider, switched on the left signal lights to alert other road users of their relatively slow speed which is estimated to be between 30kmh and 40kmh.

Chung, who was driving behind them did not see their vehicle and crashed into them. He was believed to have been travelling at a speed of 100kmh - 10kmh above the legal speed limit of 90kmh.

The force of the collision caused the motorcyle to surge forward and crash into another motorcycle ridden by 22-year-old Malaysian Lim Chee Keat.

All three were thrown off their motorcycles and landed onto the road. Jong died at the scene while the other two suffered injuries and were taken to the National University Hospital.
