Teen's marriage case adjourned
By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent

AN 18-year-old woman who is seeking permission from the High Court to marry her boyfriend - over the objections of her parents - will have to wait before finding out if the nuptials can go ahead.

The woman's case was adjourned following a brief hearing on Monday in an action believed to be the first of its kind here in recent times.

Because the woman is under 21 and her parents object to the union, she needs court approval before wedding her 25-year-old boyfriend. He is the father of her young son.

The couple wanted to get married last year, but her parents protested. The reasons for the objection are not known. The woman's 25-year-old boyfriend owns his own company.

Because of the woman's age, the mother of her prospective husband filed an application seeking the court's consent for the marriage.

On Monday, Justice Woo Bih Li adjourned the matter till Nov 10 for the applicant's lawyer, Mr Ismail Atan, to clarify issues relating to the law on marriages.

The woman met her boyfriend while she was working as a sales girl.

In July last year, she gave birth to a boy.
