TWO Singaporean men have been caught for smuggling more than 120,000 packets of contraband cigarettes worth $1.12 million in two separate raids.
In the first raid, Singapore Customs officers received a tip-off on the loot at a warehouse at Tagore Industrial Estate on Oct 4.
They detained the suspect they have been trailing, and this led to five pallets of boxes containing 60 units of sub-woofers.
Each subwoofer was hollowed out and stuffed with 89,980 packets of contraband cigarettes. The 29-year-old suspect was charged in Court on Oct 6.
Another 33,460 packets of contraband cigarettes were seized at Woodlands Industrial Park on Oct 9.
Five crates of the loot were found neatly packed under more than 6,000 bamboo poles used as cover loads in this operation.
The 30-year-old importer was nabbed and charged on Oct 10.
The duty and GST involved in the seized cigarettes amounted to more than $945,200.
