Death fall victim had affair
By Khushwant Singh, Court Reporter

MORE allegations of adultery surfaced on Tuesday at the trial of odd-job labourer Tharema Vejayan Govindasamy.

This time they involved his wife Smaelmeerah Abdul Aziz, who fell to her death from the 13th floor of a block in Stirling Road on July 1 last year.

Tharema is on trial for murdering his wife.

At Tuesday's hearing, Tharema's friend, Madam Selvaranee Kanakasabai testified that they met after he was released form jail in February last year.

'He wanted to know where his wife was and when I told him I did not know, he said that she was having an affair with his friend named Mani,' she said.

She told the court that the relationship was likely as Madam Shaelmeerah and Mani talked often over the phone and were fond of each other.

This was confirmed a few days later.

'When informed that her husband was looking for her, her friend admitted she was putting up with Mani', said Madam Selvaranee, 31, a receptionist.

She also told Tharema's lawyer Mr Glenn Knight that Madam Shaelmeerah also had a boyfriend called Jega.

Mr Knight then showed her transcripts of SMS messages retrieved from the victim's cell phone.

The messages included declarations of love to Jega as well as to Tharema, on the same day.

Mr Knight got Madam Selvaraneee to admit to the court that her friend was not a nice person for cheating on her husband.

Madam Shaelmeerah had also complained that her elder sister was trying to wreck her marriage with black magic.
