A TEENAGE girl hospitalised for the past two weeks after being stabbed and slashed repeatedly emerged from the hospital for the first time yesterday for the grim task of sending off her murdered mother.

The 14-year-old, who lost an eye and nearly a ear during the brutal attack in her Yishun flat, travelled to Mandai, where she stoically sat through the funeral of her mother.

Seated in a wheelchair and wearing sunglasses, a surgical mask and a scarf, she watched as family and friends said their final farewells to Ms Yang Jie.

The body of the China national was found at a block in Yishun Avenue 11 on Sept 19. In a flat six storeys above, police discovered two more dead women and the teenager, who was covered in stab wounds. She was the lone survivor.

China national Wang Zhijian, 42, who lived with the women, has been charged for the murder of one of the women, Ms Zhang Meng, 42, and is the prime suspect in the other deaths.

During Ms Yang's funeral at Mandai Crematorium yesterday, the teenager was flanked by her biological father and other relatives.

The girl, who went to secondary school in Singapore, was dressed simply. She wore jeans, a dark-blue T-shirt, sports shoes and a sports jacket. Her cap, sunglasses, surgical mask and scarf, however, barely covered her injuries.

Her left arm was in a sling, but in her right she held a bunch of white daisies with a card placed among them.

A note, handwritten in Chinese, read: 'Dearest mother, we love you. You will always live in our hearts. We will live well. Go in peace.'

As her relatives broke down, the girl - who had been called strong - remained stoic during the half-hour-long Buddhist funeral service. Her composure only broke when her mother's coffin was wheeled into the furnace.

While the incident has left her traumatised, the girl plans to continue studying in Singapore, said her grandmother, Madam Zhang Wei.

Apart from Ms Yang and Ms Zhang, also killed in the rampage was Ms Zhang's daughter, Feng Jianyu, 17, who was also studying in Singapore. Wang is expected to appear in court today.
