Helpful cops attacked
By Khushwant Singh
POLICE officers who went to the aid of a man, found bleeding and lying in the middle of a car park in Ang Mo Kio in Aug, were abused and attacked - by the man himself.

Ng Keng Leng, 44, on Thursday was jailed six months for assaulting a police officer and fined $2,000 for abusing another officer.

Asking for leniency, he told the district court that he was suffering from nose cancer and was in a daze that day as he had drank too much cough mixture.

Advised by District Judge Roy Neighbour that he could not plead guilty and then denied intending to abuse and hurt the police officers, Ng withdrew his earlier statements.

He then said that he had committed the offences in a moment of folly.

The court heard that a resident had called police about a man, whose legs were bleeding, lying in the car park near Block 574 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at 12.20pm on Aug 20.

When police arrived 20 minutes later, an officer called for an ambulance.

His partner tried to ask Ng what was wrong but was abused instead.

When warned not to be abusive, Ng jumped up and charged towards an officer and elbowed him in the chest.

The two officers then subdued and arrested Ng.

Last year, some 150 public servants were assaulted while performing their duty. In 2006, the figure was 157.
