GOVERNMENT workers incinerated almost 1,800 litres of frozen yoghurt bars yesterday as they began the process of junking China-made dairy products tainted with toxic chemicals.
About 500 cartons of the dessert - called Yili Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yoghurt Flavoured Ice Confection - were destroyed at the Tuas incinerator, under the watchful eyes of the National Environment Agency and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority.
The bars were one of three Chinese dairy products that local health officials found to have been contaminated with melamine.
The chemical, normally found in plastics, has been blamed for killing at least three babies in China and leaving 50,000 others with problems like kidney stones.
A similar fate awaits the two other recalled foods, White Rabbit creamy candy and Dutch Lady strawberry flavoured milk, said officials, although a date has not been fixed.
